WHAT IS ALCOHOLISM?

Alcoholism or Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, financial, or health consequences. It is a chronic disease that affects millions, cutting across all demographics and walks of life. Here are the key characteristics of alcoholism:

  • Craving, which is a strong need or urge to drink.
  • Loss of control, which results in the inability to limit drinking on any given occasion.
  • Physical dependence, where you experience withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, change in personality, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.
  • Tolerance develops and you need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to achieve the same effect.

WHY TALK ABOUT ALCOHOLISM?

The journey to understanding and addressing alcoholism begins with awareness. By shedding light on this subject, I hope to break the stigma and encourage open conversations. According to the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 228.4 million people ages 12 and older (79.2% in this age group) reported that they drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime. The 2024 NSDUH also reported that 57.9 million people ages 12 and older (20.1% in this age group) acknowledged that they had participated in binge drinking in the past month. These statistics underscore the widespread nature of alcohol use and the importance of addressing its potential negative impacts.

For me, this topic is deeply personal. Growing up in a household where alcohol was abused significantly impacted my life. It shaped my understanding of the world and instilled in me a passion to educate others about the pitfalls of addiction. It is important to note that addiction to alcohol is only one form of addiction; individuals can also be addicted to other substances and behaviors beyond alcohol and illicit drugs. Whether you are personally affected or know someone who is, understanding the nuances of alcoholism can be a crucial step in fostering empathy and getting support.
